Search Engine Optimization or SEO and Social Media are mutually affect one another. I say this because, I have seen that both help each other get the needed results on a website.
Social media will help you get traffic. You serve the content / products as possible to reach an audience of readers. Serve and enjoy your audience. On the other hand, SEO to help you reach your audience when they find what they need. It is like the mechanism of drag and thrust.
Social media helps you "push" your article / product / tools for your audience.
Search Engine Optimization helps you "draw" your audience towards you when they're looking for you.
So, according to my mind, the ideal situation is to have a healthy body - with a good frame system (SEO), built in the surrounding volume by developing good muscle (Fill) and go about your regular job, it will give you physical healthy (Social Media).
